Azerbaijan continues the “restoration” of the Surb Ghazanchetsots (Holy All Savior) Cathedral in Shushi
On April 15, some Azerbaijani Telegram channels shared photos of the ongoing "restoration" of the Surb Ghazanchetsots Amenaprkich Church in Shushi, indicating that work has resumed and repairs to the roof and damaged walls are underway (https://t.me/bez_tor/45064?single&fbclid=IwAR1vTKBZIOU9nXEi2j6g99_SdoY77kZ_VRbL5kScMJApTsYvpp00iNduWQg).
However, it is evident from the photos that the Azerbaijani side destroyed the cruciform window on one of the double facades and the sculpture above it (Figs. 1 - 3).
The Ghazanchetsots Cathedral has a similar cruciform window and an iconostasis on each facade (Fig. 4). The sculpture on the west facade depicted the theme "Christ Crucified" with a corresponding inscription (Fig. 5). During the 44-day war, the southern front of the church, along with the cross window, was also damaged by Azerbaijani bombardment. This damage is visible in photos taken as early as October 2020 (Figs. 6, 7). Therefore, the deliberate destruction and modification of the details of the cathedral are evident from the very beginning of the so-called restoration of the cathedral.
