Smbotani Bridge («Trekhneri Kap»)

Location

The bridge is located in the Artsakh Republic's Hadrut region, about 16 kilometers north of Tsamdzor village (Fig. 1). After a 44-day war in Artsakh, it is currently occupied by Azerbaijan.

Historical overview    

There is no historical information about the bridge, and there are no inscriptions on it. According to S. Karapetyan, it was built in the twentieth century (Karapetyan 2009, 135).

Architectural- compositional examination

It is a single-span bridge. The bridge measures 4.15 m in length and 3.28 m in width (Fig. 2). (Karapetyan 2009, 135). The piers are constructed on nearby rocks along the riverbed. The bridge is constructed of quartz and limestone and fortified with lime mortar (Fig. 3).

The condition before, during, and after the war

The monument was fully standing and functioning prior to the war. There is no information available about the bridge during or after the war.

Bibliographic examination

There is little information available regarding the monument. Our primary source of information is S. Karapetyan's work on Artsakh bridges (Karapetyan 2009, 135).
