Taghavard Berdahonj Fortress

Location:

The monument is located about 2.5 km south-east of Taghavard village, Martuni region, on an egg-shaped mountain isolated on four sides. After the 44 days of war, it is under the control of Azerbaijan.

Historical Overview

No historical information is known about the period of construction of the fortress. Random finds in the area date back to the 8th-13th centuries.

Architectural-Compositional Description

The rock mass is surrounded by double walls 4-9 meters high and occupies an area of approximately 2370 m2 (Fig. 1-3). The fences made of rough stones had towers, which are not completely preserved. The only entrance to the castle is from the north-east, from where one can pass to the first row of the wall, then to the citadel. Traces of other buildings are preserved: separate parts of the fortress walls, as well as a water reservoir about 5 meters deep. The reservoir and the source of its nourishment are also testified by t. Barkhudariants (Barkhudariants 1895, 135).

The State Before During and After the War

Before the war, the monument was in a half demolished condition, some parts of the walls and towers were missing. During the 44-day war, hot battles took place near the village of Taghavard, and most of the village is now under the control of Azerbaijani troops. As during the war, no information is known about the condition of the monument after that.

Bibliographic Examination

Historical information about the monument is very scarce. Information about the half-ruined fortress has been preserved only in the work of M. Barkhudariants (Barkhudariants 1895, 134-135).
